Possibility of grass-fed transport restrictions must be ruled out

ICOS co-operative marts have described as ‘very concerning’ the transport limitations that are reported to be included in Bord Bia’s proposal seeking Protected Geographical Indicator (PGI) status for Irish grass-fed beef.

Ray Doyle, Livestock & Environment Executive of ICOS said, “There appears to be a stipulation in the proposal that animals can’t be brought to a factory any further than two hours away from a certified grass-fed farm, and that they must be transported by a licensed haulier, all of which is limiting.

“Apart from everything else, this will have the effect of inhibiting free choice in which factory a farmer chooses to do business with.  For example, some factories also specialise in receiving particular weights and sizes of animals and not all of these will be within a two hour drive of a relevant farm.

“We appreciate that Bord Bia is seeking to promote the natural and sustainable origins of Irish beef but this particular measure, if it’s really being proposed, should be ruled out.

“We’ll be contacting Bord Bia to seek clarification in this regard.”
