Comhar BIA
The Comhar BIA project commenced in 2025 with a formal partnership between ICOS and Europe’s leading climate innovation agency Climate KIC, and builds on the work of both organisations in the development of Ireland’s Bioeconomy. Comhar BIA will develop a network of regional, collaborative and co-owned biorefineries with a supporting enabling shared services structure to accelerate commercial development and innovation. In Spring 2025 ICOS held an expression of interest process for members to participate in a feasibility study and Arrabawn-Tipperary Co-operative were selected to participate in this first study which was funded by the Enterprise Ireland Smart Regions Innovation Scheme and is co-funded by the Golden Jubilee Trust. The techno-economic work was conducted by AtkinsRealis with additional input from Climate KIC and ICOS. It is hoped that this work will lead to the development of a future-resilient biorefinery in the mid-west with a biomethane facility as a core technology. Follow-on phases will formalize ownership structures, partnerships, financial models and detailed design. This unique approach should result in a more integrated value chain with greater security of supply and the sharing of economic, social and environmental benefits across regional partnerships.
